JSA wins pitch Waalfront Nijmegen

JSA has won the pitch for the design of three urban villas in the Waalfront in Nijmegen, right next to the landing of the new city bridge. The assignment involves the integral design of 45 apartments divided over the 3 building volumes that will be placed in a campus-like setting within a pocket park along the river Waal.

The Waalfront is located west of the medieval city of Nijmegen. The place is special because the first Roman settlement in the Netherlands, Ulpia Noviomagnus Batavorum, was located here, around 200 AD. Many years later the defensive stronghold Fort Krayenhof was built on this spot. In the new master plan, the 20th century industry gradually makes way for the city and history is given a place in the new development.

The different layers of time make the place special and will be of significance for the design of both the park and the apartment blocks, which will emerge exactly on this spot as a harmonious integral plan.
